Ecommerce sites can also benefit greatly from this instant method of advising people of deals, sales events, and contests. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, Pew Research Center <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that nearly two-thirds of U.S. adults own a smartphone, and 97 percent of them utilize text messaging at least once a day. That falls in line with what we\u2019ve seen with mobile shopping: People want to do it all from their handheld devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While email is still a popular way to inform consumers\u00a0of news and sales, SMS has the advantage of reaching those people instantly, and potentially during times when they\u2019re waiting in lines and need something to pass the time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to smsbump, an SMS platform, SMS marketing has the highest reach, with 75 percent of all mobile phones capable of receiving texts, and SMS has the highest open rate at about 98 percent \u2014 though that\u2019s because most devices require one tap to open a message even to delete it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s surprising, though, is that SMS response rates \u2014 clicks, replies, and other actions \u2014 is 45 percent, compared to the average email response rate of just 6 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_125456\" style=\"width: 446px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125456\" class=\"wp-image-125456 size-full\" title=\"Page views from an SMS campaign\" src=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/pec-text-pageviews.jpg\" alt=\"The results of\u00a0a small-business SMS campaign to just over 1,500 recipients, from\u00a0Google Analytics. Basic text-messaging services cost as little as $99 per month, flat rate, while feature-rich systems run from 3 cents and 5 cents per recipient. Still, spending $70 to $100 to reach 2,000 customers directly makes sense. That, and SMS messaging is one of the most secure methods to reach others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tips on Using Text to Convert Shoppers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While text messaging can be used for many things, including notices of shipping and delivery times, promotional texting is one of the best ways to convert a loyal customer base. The key is to think like the mobile user and how he currently interacts with the world via a smartphone.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Make signup simple.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The most-used method of collecting cell numbers is inviting people to text a special code. Even easier, though, is including the mobile phone number and an \u201cI agree\u201d checkbox to an existing online form, including the email signup and checkout forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_125454\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125454\" class=\"wp-image-125454 size-full\" title=\"Simple texting and email signup form.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/pec-text-email-signup.jpg\" alt=\"Including the SMS signup as part of the email list form, or during the checkout process, can increase the number of subscribers. That\u2019s why so many businesses \u2014 including big ones \u2014 use shared shortcodes and keywords to identify the business. Either way, preface text messages with an identifier.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, my local Texas Roadhouse restaurant prefaces every text message with \u201cFt. Meyers TXRH.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Since the identifier counts against the total character count of 160, you may want to abbreviate your store\u2019s name to save space.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Use trackable, short URLs.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Most text messages will include a link to a store\u2019s website, or to a special landing page. Using short links saves characters and also makes the message easier to read. Some systems will automatically shorten links, or you can use services like <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bit.ly<\/a>. Including tracking code in the longer (underlying) URL will allow you to analyze the success of the message. You\u2019ll at least want to measure clicks, bounce rates, and sales.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Make the <em>single<\/em> call-to-action clear. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep the message simple and limited to one topic. Messages that focus on one key factor work best. Consider the following examples.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Joe\u2019s Shoes: Save 30% during our summer end sale!<\/em> <em>[<\/em>insert short link to website<em>]<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>XYZ Cooking: Use coupon code SAVE25NOW<\/em> <em>&#8211; includes sale and clearance. If you don\u2019t require the full 160 characters, don\u2019t use them.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Be careful with multi-media messages (MMS).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> True, photos and graphics convert better, but not all phones will process MMS messages the same, and these message types costs more to send. Videos and images take more processing time to open, too.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Send less often than email.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SMS should not replace email campaigns. Limit texts to 2 to 3 per month, depending on your customer base and target audience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Opt for a service that allows replies.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some recipients will reply to your text messages. Using a service that allows you to read and reply can help close more sales.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Study SMS reports.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Track\u00a0how many messages were delivered, how many bounced, and how many were blocked by the carrier. This will help keep the list clean. If you took text signups in the email subscription form, reach out to those who may have blocked the shortcode you use.
