Google&#8217;s John Mueller addressed the issue in 2021 on Reddit when a user <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SEO\/comments\/rs8edj\/comment\/hqkwctl\/?utm_source=reddit&amp;utm_medium=web2x&amp;context=3\">asked<\/a>, &#8220;In your opinion, is keyword density still an SEO factor in 2021?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mueller&#8217;s response: &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet keywords are important, especially exact matches. Keywords inform us of what consumers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/seo-3-tools-to-find-related-keywords\">search for<\/a> and help Google align web pages to searchers&#8217; needs.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, the priority for any article or description is to engage humans, not search engines. But using exact-match keywords will help the page rank more predictably. So if organic traffic is important to your business, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/SEO-How-to-Part-4-Keyword-Research-Concepts\">research<\/a> relevant keywords and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/SEO-How-to-Part-7-Mapping-Keywords-to-Content\">incorporate<\/a> them in body copy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/seo-how-to-optimize-title-tags-for-ecommerce\">titles<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/how-html-headings-help-seo\">headings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Helpful Content<\/h3>\n<p>Years ago search optimizers believed the more keywords, the better. Webmaster guidelines for <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/essentials\/spam-policies\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/webmasters-guidelines-30fba23a\">Bing<\/a> now state that excessive, unnatural keywords \u2014 keyword stuffing \u2014 violate their policies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Google <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-helpful-content-update-what-to-expect-387328\">announced<\/a> a &#8220;helpful content&#8221; algorithm update, shifting the focus from algorithm-driven content to human-friendly. John Mueller <a href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@johnmu\/110060672987015552\">said last month<\/a> that keyword density was not a signal in evaluating content and has been largely ignored for years.
