Here&#8217;s why.<\/p>\n<h3>Internal Anchor Text<\/h3>\n<h4>Why Anchor Text?<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/seo-10-faqs-for-internal-links\">importance of anchor text<\/a> has been confirmed many times by Google&#8217;s representatives \u2014 from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6ybpXU0ckKQ\">2013 video<\/a> with Matt Cutts (the then head of Google&#8217;s webspam team) to two 2020 videos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rO6wTSL6joE&amp;t=425s\">June<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aEE8wfC-7gA&amp;t=995s\">September<\/a>, with John Mueller (Google&#8217;s search relations team lead).<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 videos address two key points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internal and external anchor text helped Google understand the linked page<\/li>\n<li>The context surrounding or near the link is secondary; the anchor text is much stronger.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"max-width: 570px; \"><div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"  style=\"max-width: 570px; padding-bottom:56.25%;\" ><div class=\"container-lazyload preview-lazyload container-youtube js-lazyload--not-loaded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aEE8wfC-7gA&#038;t=995s\" class=\"lazy-load-youtube preview-lazyload preview-youtube\" data-video-title=\"English Google SEO office-hours from September 25, 2020\" title=\"Play video &quot;English Google SEO office-hours from September 25, 2020&quot;\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aEE8wfC-7gA&amp;t=995s<\/a><noscript>Video can't be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aEE8wfC-7gA&#038;t=995s\" title=\"English Google SEO office-hours from September 25, 2020\">English Google SEO office-hours from September 25, 2020 (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aEE8wfC-7gA&#038;t=995s)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h4>Meaningful Text<\/h4>\n<p>In the 2020 videos, Mueller suggests &#8220;reasonable&#8221; anchor text without providing examples. &#8220;Reasonable&#8221; likely implies the text should make sense for a human and encourage a click.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure a person looking at the link can ascertain the general purpose of the linked page. If the linked page requires an action, include it in the anchor text, such as &#8220;sign up&#8221; or &#8220;buy now.&#8221; Anchor text linking to informational content could include &#8220;guide,&#8221; &#8220;resources,&#8221; or a description, such as &#8220;SEO tips.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are no rules so long as the text is meaningful to search engines and humans. Certainly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/yes-seo-keywords-remain-important\">keywords in the anchor text<\/a> are important because they help Google to assign relevancy signals to the linked page, but communicating to people is the priority.<\/p>\n<h4>Bad Anchor Text<\/h4>\n<p>Google representatives don&#8217;t always offer specific dos and don&#8217;ts, but this one is clear: don&#8217;t use &#8220;here&#8221; as an anchor text. Google&#8217;s Lizzi Sassman, a technical writer, stated anchor text for internal and external links should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-anchor-text-here-is-bad-link-text-34656.html\">include words<\/a> that are related to that topic to, again, help humans and search engines.<\/p>\n<h4>Links in Images<\/h4>\n<p>When an image is linked, its alt attribute is the anchor text. Search optimizers have suspected this for years. Google&#8217;s John Mueller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zm7mn2sGuyw&amp;t=3905s\">confirmed it<\/a> in 2019 during a Google Hangout.<\/p>\n<p>A descriptive alt attribute has always been essential for blind and disabled users. Now we know that Google relies on it, too. So make sure it describes the image <em>and<\/em> the linked page.<\/p>\n<h3>Confirmations<\/h3>\n<p>Internal anchor text has been part of professional website audits for years. It&#8217;s helpful to have official confirmations from Google personnel. Use descriptive and meaningful anchor text.
