In this post, I&#8217;ll address recent GA4 updates, post-transition tips, and options for retaining historical Universal Analytics data.<\/p>\n<h3>Universal Analytics Sunsetting<\/h3>\n<p>Nearly all Universal Analytics (UA) installs have stopped collecting and reporting new data. Once this goes into effect, you&#8217;ll need a Google Analytics 4 property to measure performance.&#8221; <em>Click image to enlarge.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Where UA has stopped processing, all graphs will show 0 with no data going forward. To continue receiving analytics info, create a GA4 property.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a non-Google analytics platform, which many have done owing to Google&#8217;s clumsy UA-to-GA4 transition.<\/li>\n<li>Do nothing and lose essential visibility into website traffic, engagement, and conversions \u2014 not an option for any serious ecommerce merchant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The easiest and most cost-effective option is to set up a GA4 property and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/ramping-up-google-analytics-4\">continue using<\/a> the powerful analytics platform for your website or app. GA4 is free, after all. Google provides links in UA report headers to instructions\u00a0 \u2014 see images above.<\/p>\n<p>A GA4 property will likely last for years. Universal Analytics launched in 2005 and ended in 2023 \u2014 18 years. UA reports will disappear then.<\/p>\n<p>To retain UA history, archive the data where it&#8217;s easily accessible \u2014 to compare current traffic, engagement, and conversion info.<\/p>\n<p>The easiest and quickest archive option is to export key reports manually. Export formats on UA are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PDF,<\/li>\n<li>Google Sheets,<\/li>\n<li>Excel,<\/li>\n<li>CSV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Otherwise, use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Google Sheets add-on to export and archive your data. Certain metrics are compatible between the two platforms. The list includes a link to Looker Studio to compare UA and GA4 data and identify glitches.<\/p>\n<p>Google Analytics is going through its most significant evolution to date. The migration from UA to GA4 is not automatic \u2014 users must act. But the GA4&#8217;s value is tremendous.
