{"id":1533669,"date":"2024-02-25T09:56:18","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T14:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/?p=1533669"},"modified":"2024-03-22T09:57:06","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T13:57:06","slug":"email-and-text-marketing-are-cookie-proof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/email-and-text-marketing-are-cookie-proof","title":{"rendered":"Email and Text Marketing Are Cookie-proof"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2024, Chrome will end third-party tracking cookies once and for all, forcing some marketers to look for alternatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Google Chrome is the world&#8217;s most popular internet browser, with just over 65% of the global market in February 2024, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">according to Statista<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chrome began eliminating tracking cookies last month for approximately 1% of users and will have wholly <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/privacysandbox.com\/open-web\/#the-privacy-sandbox-timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">removed third-party cookies<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by year&#8217;s end<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chrome is among the last bastions for third-party tracking cookies. Up to now, Google has permitted tracking while it devised ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/privacy-tactics-complicate-ecommerce-marketing\">blunt the impact<\/a> of going cookieless on its advertising business. Meanwhile, Apple&#8217;s Safari, Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox, Opera, Brave, and the surging Arc Browser have all taken elimination steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Signal Loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Google, Facebook, ad networks, and retargeting platforms have long relied on third-party cookies for targeted advertising for their clients. Placing cookies across millions of websites enables those providers to track the actions of individual consumers across the web and serve relevant, high-performing ads.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The end of cross-site tracking cookies means the advertising networks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/shopify-audiences-boosts-cookieless-ads\">lose signal<\/a> and become relatively less effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The result for most marketers is to double down on direct relationships with consumers.<\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Direct Message Marketing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Direct message or lifecycle marketing employs email, text (i.e., SMS and MMS), and messaging apps to communicate directly with customers and prospects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Direct message marketing is already a popular promotional channel for many good reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Strong engagement.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Email and text messages are sent directly to subscribers and tend to have strong engagement rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For example, at least\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/firstpagesage.com\/reports\/roas-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one report<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> put the average return on advertising spend for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/ai-for-email-marketing\">email marketing<\/a> in 2024 at 3.5 to 1. Compare this to 1.8 for Facebook ads and 1.55 for pay-per-click search advertising.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/is-text-messaging-the-next-commerce-channel\">Text message marketing<\/a> may even be better. A top example is Gary Vaynerchuk&#8217;s Wine Text. Text messages can have extremely high engagement rates. <em>Click image to enlarge.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Personalization and targeting.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> With direct message marketing, marketers can use subscribers&#8217; interactions and behaviors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/secrets-of-email-segmentation\">to tailor messages<\/a>, increasing engagement and conversions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If a subscriber tends to buy more red wine than white, WineText can send offers for the former or bundle bottles to introduce a variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Less expensive than ads.<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Direct message marketing is relatively more cost-effective than top-of-funnel ads. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Focusing on individuals who have shown an interest in a product or service lowers the cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Strong customer relationships<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. With direct message marketing, a business &#8220;owns&#8221; the relationship. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The subscriber is familiar with the company and presumably welcomes its solicitations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Getting Subscribers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To be sure, the ROAS of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/study-klaviyo-text-messaging-drives-dtc-ecommerce\">email and text marketing<\/a> has always been high, long before the elimination of third-party cookies. So if direct messaging is so powerful, why weren&#8217;t marketers focused on it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The answer is getting email or text subscribers is difficult. For example, Mailchimp estimated that the average email subscription rate in 2024 for ecommerce businesses was 0.19% \u2014 for every 500 folks who see an ecommerce email subscription form, slightly fewer than one will sign up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many online stores sought subscribers in conjunction with a first sale.
