External backlinks, especially from trustworthy sites, remain a key <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/google-and-eeat-explained\">ranking factor<\/a> and generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/yes-clicks-and-engagement-impact-seo\">clicks and engagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my top three tools to analyze a site&#8217;s backlinks.<\/p>\n<h3>Google Search Console<\/h3>\n<p>The &#8220;Links&#8221; tab in <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/about\">Search Console<\/a> provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/chrome-extensions-for-search-console\">data<\/a> for your own site(s), including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pages with the most external and internal links.<\/li>\n<li>Top anchor text of external links.<\/li>\n<li>Top linking sites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clicking rows in these reports will list pages containing backlinks to your site.<\/p>\n<p>Search Console provides only a snapshot of your site&#8217;s backlink profile. It doesn&#8217;t include <em>all<\/em> the backlinks Google detects nor reveal if those backlinks affect its ranking algorithm. Google often ignores irrelevant or manipulative backlinks.<\/p>\n<p>Search Console is free to use.<\/p>\n<h3>Moz<\/h3>\n<p>Moz allows registered users to see top backlinks pointing to <em>any<\/em> site for free. Users can run 10 backlink reports daily without upgrading to a premium account.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/link-explorer\">Moz&#8217;s Link Explorer <\/a>includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inbound links, sorted by Moz&#8217;s Page Authority metric.<\/li>\n<li>Linking domains, sorted by Moz&#8217;s Domain Authority metric.<\/li>\n<li>Anchor text of inbound links, sorted by the number of domains using that text.<\/li>\n<li>Top pages, sorted by the number of external links pointing to each page.<\/li>\n<li>Spam score: pages linking to your site, sorted by Moz&#8217;s quality score.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Users can expand rows in any section to see the URLs linking to a page or using a specific anchor text. Users can also compare their backlink profile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/3-tools-to-research-competitors-backlinks\">to competitors&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Moz provides a helpful, quick overview of any site&#8217;s top backlinks and pages for free. The &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/features\/backlinks\/\">Backlink Analytics<\/a>&#8221; section includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A backlink overview: top anchor text, categories of referring domains, backlink types, top-linking countries, sites with similar backlink profiles, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>All backlinks, sorted by Semrush&#8217;s Authority Score (referring domains, number of backlinks, and organic traffic of each linking page). Filter this report by type (user-generated links or sponsored), the &#8220;follow&#8221; status, placement (footer, header, content, or sitewide), language, and linking site type (e.g., ecommerce, blog, wiki).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Anchor text, sorted by the number of linking pages using specific text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Referring domains, sorted by the number of backlinks and by Authority Score.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Indexed pages, sorted by the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.practicalecommerce.com\/link-building-with-press-release-distribution\">linking domains<\/a> pointing to each page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Outbound links and domains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Semrush also provides &#8220;live&#8221; updates of the latest acquired links for any domain. It claims to be the fastest such tool, with links appearing in its database within 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Semrush doesn&#8217;t offer a free version.
